With that said, my favorite sport to practice is MMA. I love learning how to fight. I love fighting for fitness. The workouts I get boxing and kicking and kneeing and elbowing are the greatest. It's fantastic for cardio and gives me a great plyometrics style workout on my upper body. Oh how I love they achy way I feel after I've been punching the bags for an hour.
Do I practice MMA for self-defense? No way. At 6'5" and 250+ pounds no one ever blows me sh*t. If they would blow me sh*t, they'd probably my size, younger, stronger, drunker and I sure as hell wouldn't want to fight them. Furthermore, fighting sucks. When I took Muay Thai kickboxing classes, the first thing I realized is that I never want to get in a fight. Someone's going to get hurt (probably me) and someone's going to get arrested (probably me). So, MMA will always just be a sport for me. At the most, I might do some light sparring but I'll be wearing protective head gear and pads. For now though, I'll stick to the the bags and change the channel whenever it's on TV.
